The Gambler, by Kenny Rogers

The Gambler is a very catchy song about a man giving "poker advice" to his friend on a train. Kenny Rogers uses poker terms as a metaphor to real life, because the gambler is trying to give his companion advice about life, not poker.

The diction used in this song is very slang, similar to other Kenny Rogers songs, and it adds an air of country, and seems very relaxed. Also, rhymes are used at the end of ech line, which is why one of the reasons that the song is so catchy, in my opinion. This song has great meaning overall, and contains some pretty good advice, if you ask me.

  1. Nice interpretation of this song. Its an interesting metaphor but it makes the song a lot more interesting and yeah, good advice for people.

  2. Richard, this analysis is not complete and needs work. A paragraph should be a minimum of five sentences, and you need more specific analysis of the song. The assignment specified to ignore end rhyme (because almost every sone has it), and "great meaning overall" is not a specific enough observation.

You open with a strong observation about the poker metaphor. Develop and support it.
